History of Pembroke Pines

The city was officially incorporated on January 16, 1960. The name of the city, i.e., "Pembroke Pines" was suggested by Dr. Kipnis, the then mayor of the city. He drew the inspiration for name from Sir Edward Reed, who was a Member of Britain's Parliament. In 1880s, Sir Edward Reed purchased a substantial land and farmed over it. A road was laid through his land and named "Pembroke Road". Dr. Kipnis happened to suggest the name of the city due to pine trees grew near Pembroke Road. American Indians are believed to be the first inhabitants of Pembroke Pines. They occupied the city about 4,000 years ago. Post World War II the city transformed into an agricultural land and occupied by dairy farms. This era witnessed the establishment of Waldrep Dairy Farm. One of the first homes in Pembroke Pines was said to be belonged to Dr. Kipnis and his wife. It was built in 1956. Dr. Kipnis also became the first mayor of Pembroke Pines, which was then called "Village of Pembroke Pines". In 1959, Pembroke Pines was incorporated into a village. In January 1960, Pembroke Pines was transformed into a city from a village. By 2006, Pembroke Pines claimed to have the largest Charter School System in the Broward county.
